August is National Dog Month, so what better time to shine a light on an organization that does amazing things for dogs, other pets, and the people who love them! The Isle of Wight County Humane Society has become an important part of our community because of its compassion and care for animals in need.
The Humane Society’s mission says it all: “Our mission is to improve the lives of companion animals and people within our community through advocacy, education, and support.” The Society works hard to promote responsible pet care and kindness toward all animals in our area.
Passion and Care Since the Beginning
One of the most inspiring things about the Humane Society is that it is run entirely by volunteers. It was founded in 1980 by four people who shared a deep love for animals and wanted to help both the county’s Animal Services and local families. In 1999, the group became a nonprofit foster-based organization. Over time, with help from pet adoptions and generous donations, the Society has grown and added programs to help even more pets and owners.
One of these programs is a medical grant that helps pet owners pay for vet care they otherwise could not afford. Another important program helps cover the cost of spaying and neutering pets to prevent unwanted litters.
“We strongly believe in spaying and neutering pets,” the Society says. “While we do not run a clinic ourselves, we work with trusted local clinics to provide this service. Our program helps pet owners who qualify by covering some or all of the cost.”
Finding Loving Homes
The Humane Society also works hard to find forever homes for pets in need.
“We use Petfinder to list our foster pets that are ready for adoption,” the Society says. “We find loving homes for dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, rabbits, and other unique pets.”
Adoption events usually take place on Sundays, from noon to 3 p.m., at the PetSmart store at 12142 Jefferson Avenue in Newport News. If you are thinking about adding a furry friend to your family, be sure to check the Humane Society’s Facebook page for updates and photos of pets who are waiting for homes.
Keeping the Mission Alive
Volunteers help keep the founders’ vision alive. If you love animals and want to make a difference, the Society would love your help! Visit www.iowchs.org to find a volunteer application and learn more about how to get involved.
The Humane Society depends on donations from caring people and local businesses. Community Electric was proud to support the Society last year through our Youth Program. One of our Youth Program participants, Jorja Powell, chose the Humane Society to receive a $500 charitable donation on her behalf.
“Every pet we care for costs an average of $800 each month,” the Society shares. “Since we are run completely by volunteers, we rely on the generosity of kind people like you. We do not receive government funding, so your donations help keep our programs going strong and save more lives.”
Let’s show our support and thank the Isle of Wight County Humane Society for all the love, care, and hope they bring to pets and families in our community!
