At Community Electric Cooperative (CEC), we love trees! They provide shade, protect against wind, and offer homes to wildlife. But when trees grow too close to power lines, they can become more of a hazard than a help. That’s where our Vegetation Management Program comes in — keeping your electricity reliable while being kind to nature.
What Is Vegetation Management?
Think of it as giving nature a little TLC. Through tree trimming, removal, mowing, and careful herbicide use, we keep our rights-of-way clear of vegetation that could interfere with power lines. This effort not only keeps the lights on but also ensures safety for everyone.
The Big Picture
- Safety First: Trees near power lines can cause outages and even create dangerous situations during storms.
- Efficient Maintenance: We follow a six-year maintenance cycle for Isle of Wight, Southampton, and Suffolk to keep our system running smoothly.
- Smart Techniques: All pruning is done by professionals from Xylem using ANSI A300 Pruning Standards, and our herbicide applications are carefully targeted to control unwanted growth.
Herbicide? Don’t Worry!
Since 2008, we’ve used selective herbicides to stop vines, saplings, and woody plants from interfering with power lines. These herbicides are EPA-approved, applied safely by certified technicians, and re-treated every three years.
