Winter weather has caused nearly 25% of weather-related power outages in the U.S. from 2000 to 2023, with Virginia ranking seventh nationally in power outages, 94% of which were linked to severe weather. Snow, ice, and freezing rain can disrupt power systems, regardless of the utility provider, including cooperatives like Community Electric.
As winter approaches, Community Electric Cooperative (CEC) encourages its members to prepare for storms by reviewing storm safety checklists, like those found on the American Red Cross website. “Freezing temperatures and winter storms can wreak havoc on power lines, affecting power delivery and restoration efforts,” says CEC’s Manager of Operations Glen Presson.
To combat these outages, many homes and businesses are now investing in standby generators. Presson recommends contacting RECORE, CEC’s energy solutions subsidiary, to explore options for backup generators. RECORE offers a 10% discount on generator purchases, making it an excellent choice for those prioritizing uninterrupted power. However, safety is critical—proper installation and use are essential to avoid risks like carbon monoxide poisoning, fire, and electrocution.
