At Community Electric Cooperative, we believe in investing in the next generation of leaders by providing students with real-world experiences, leadership development opportunities, and meaningful connections within their community.
The Community Electric Youth Scholarship Program is designed to introduce local students to the electric cooperative industry, public service, leadership, and career opportunities that impact our communities every day.
Through hands-on experiences, statewide leadership programs, and networking opportunities with industry professionals, students will gain valuable insight into the cooperative difference while developing skills that will benefit them far beyond high school.
Scholarship & Community Impact Awards
Students selected for the program are eligible to receive:
- A $1,000 academic scholarship
- A $500 donation made by Community Electric Cooperative to a local 501(c)(3) organization of the student’s choice
Community nonprofit donations will be formally presented during the Cooperative’s Annual Meeting on August 10.
Program Events:
1. Legislative Day in Richmond, VA
Students will travel to Richmond to learn about the legislative process, meet elected officials, and gain insight into how government decisions impact electric cooperatives and rural communities.
2. Virginia Institute on Cooperative Education (VICE)
Held at beautiful Graves Mountain Lodge, this spring leadership conference dives into how co-ops work through fun, interactive games and activities. You’ll join students from across Virginia, build leadership and teamwork skills, and even compete in a co-op simulation game called Who’s Minding the Store? Bonus: top students can earn up to $2,000 in scholarships! You’ll leave with new friends, a better understanding of business—and maybe a scholarship check.
3. Day in the Life of a Lineman
Students will receive a firsthand look at the daily responsibilities of electric lineworkers and utility professionals through demonstrations, safety education, and hands-on experiences.
4. Community Electric Cooperative Annual Meeting
Students will be recognized during the Cooperative’s Annual Meeting, where community donation checks will be presented to selected nonprofit organizations.

VMDAEC EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Each year, the Education Scholarship Foundation awards $1,500 scholarships, in addition to other awards.
The selection process uses a combination of weighted criteria: 40% financial need, 40% academic achievement and 20% personal statement.
Funds can be applied toward tuition, student fees, room and board, or textbooks.
