Cooperation Among Cooperatives Powers Restoration Efforts After Winter Storm Fern

Combined with the hard work of CEC’s line workers, crews made immense progress in brutally cold and icy conditions, reducing the number of outages to fewer than 400 as of Tuesday afternoon, down from a peak of more than 4,000 in the immediate aftermath of Winter Storm Fern.

Community Electric Preps for Potentially Severe Storm

Community Electric Cooperative is closely monitoring forecasts that a potentially severe winter storm will descend on the Tidewater region this weekend. The National Weather Service cautioned Tuesday morning that the region could experience a mix of ice, snow, sleet and/or freezing rain starting Saturday and continuing into Monday.

Mountains of Resilience: Community Electric Linemen Tackle the Challenges of Hurricane Helene Restoration Efforts

The response to Hurricane Helene was unique in that all 16 cooperatives in the Virginia, Maryland and Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC) provided assistance, said J.T. Jacobs, the association’s manager of safety training and the area administrator for its Rural Electric Safety Achievement Program. Usually, a cooperative has to wait to commit response resources until it knows how a storm will affect its system. With Helene, the storm track was sufficiently far west that 14 cooperatives were able to commit resources well ahead of time, with the remaining two co-ops sending assistance once they had restored power within their systems.

Community Electric Cooperative Prepares for Impacts of Tropical Storm Ophelia

Line technicians are prepping trucks with all necessary supplies and materials for any outages that may occur as a result of the storm. System operators are monitoring the cooperative's power system and weather, and all other employees are on high alert, ready to respond to member needs, including the cooperative’s member service contact center. CEC has coordinated with co-ops in surrounding areas and states for potential assistance.
